Adventure
With this post, League of Heretics is officially launched! (I'm listening for the applause of BOTH of y'all out there.) If you're subscribed - free or not -- you'll get an article every Sunday by 6pm central time. And I do hope you'll subscribe. I'd love for LoH to become a community rather than only a newsletter.
Sometimes it can be lonely being a heretic, can't it? If you haven't read the about page where it mentions where the word heretic comes from, check that out. The short version is, it means that you choose your path, rather than having it dictated to you.
Heretics are all over the map when it comes to belief. You can be a heretic within a chosen religion when you choose anything outside orthodoxy (which means "right belief" or "right choice"). You can be considered a heretic by theists if you choose to be non-theist. Basically, anything that goes against the common practice of any particular group can get you the big red "H" badge. And sometimes it's hard, especially if you have relationships you care about and people who care about you, within the group doing the labeling.
Kudos to you for being brave, though. This community is for you. And if you feel like you're just getting to the brink of stepping over a real or imagined line, this community is for you, too. As people who have chosen to be heretics, we may not all have the same path, but there are common issues that we share. One of the biggest is, we are attempting to follow our hearts. We are leaving (or considering leaving) what no longer works and seeking something better -- something that gives us life and allows us to breathe easier.
I hope you'll share a little in the comments about that. Where do you see yourself? You're not alone! There are others who have tread this ground before, both now and throughout history. Let's enjoy what we have in common, while appreciating our differences. Welcome to the journey!
